The Greater Caucasus Range extends from the Caucasian
Natural Reverse in the vincinity of Sochi on the northeastern
shore of the Black Sea, generally treading east-southeast and
reaching nearly to Baku on the Caspian Sea, while the Lesser
Caucasus runs parallel to the greater range, at a distance
averageing about 100km (62mi) south.

The Meskheti Range is a part of the Lesser Caucasus system. The
Greater and Lesser Caucasus ranges are connected by the Likhi Range,
which separates the Kolkhida Lowland from the Kura-Aras Lowland.
In the southeast are the Talysh Mountains.

The Lesser Caucasus and the Armenian Highland constitute
the Transcaucasian Highland. The highest peak in the Caucasus
range is Mount Elbrus in the Greater Caucasus, which rises to a height
of 5, 642 metres (18,510 ft) above sea level. Mountains near Sochi
will host part of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The East European Plain (also known as Russian Plain)
isa plain comprising a series of river basins in Eastern
Europe. Together with the Northern European Plain it
constitutes the European Plain. It is the largest mountain-free
part of the European landscape.

square kilometers (1,544,408.6 sq mi)
and average about 170 moetres (557.7 ft) in
elevation. The highest point of the plain,
located in the Valdai Hills is 346.9 metres
(1,138.1ft).

The history of Russia begins with that of te Eastern
Slavs an the Finno-Ugric peoples. The state of
Garoariki (the realm of towns) which was centered
in Novgorod and included the entire areas inhabited
by llmen Slavs, Veps and Votes, was established
by the Varangian chieftain Rurik in 862 (the traditional
beginning of Russian history).

Kievan Rus, the first united East Slavic state, was
founded by Ruik's successor Oleg of Novgorod in
882. The state adopted Christianity from the Byzantine
Empire in Byzantine and Slavic cultures that defined
Russian culture for the next millennium.
